In a recent interview, CNN political analyst Mark Preston expressed concern over the Democrats’ position regarding the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He described the agency as a “loser” for the party, suggesting that the Democrats have struggled to mount an effective defense against the Trump administration’s initiatives to overhaul foreign aid spending.
The Trump administration’s moves to reevaluate and realign foreign aid spending began with a Jan. 20 executive order. This sparked protests from Democratic members of Congress outside the USAID headquarters, following DOGE Chairman Elon Musk’s announcement to shut down the agency. Preston remarked, “I think they are looking at it as a huge success because no one’s been able to stop them.”
Preston further elaborated on the challenges faced by Democrats, noting that in Washington, “they’re telling Democrats to let USAID go, just let it go because it’s a loser.” He pointed out that critics can easily target any USAID program to argue against the use of American tax dollars for overseas spending.
The situation escalated when representatives from DOGE and the State Department accessed the USAID headquarters to review its spending. This move was part of an effort to align the agency’s operations with U.S. foreign policy goals. Secretary of State Marco Rubio supported the decision to close USAID, stating during a press conference in El Salvador that the agency was “completely unresponsive” and “not functioning” as intended.
Preston’s comments also touched on the agency’s connections with American intelligence agencies, which some insiders view as a “good investment.” However, he warned, “you can still go through and find out something about condoms or about abortions or about something that is going to upset some people.”
The analyst expressed concern over the broader implications of the administration’s actions, questioning whether similar changes could be applied to other government functions. “Honestly, I don’t know who can stop them at this point,” he admitted.
Preston criticized Republicans for not opposing Trump and Musk’s plans for USAID, accusing them of relinquishing their power. “They’ve abdicated the one-third power of government that the framers created,” he stated, emphasizing that “Donald Trump owns all three.”
As for the Democrats, Preston described them as “toothless,” lacking a coherent message or leadership. Despite this, he refrained from outright criticism, acknowledging the complexity of the situation.

USAID is the heart of the deep state swamp. If Trump succeeds in dismantling it, it will largely kill the biggest cash cow in history. Go for it! If you can kill it, you will largely destroy the deep state rule over this country!

It’s about time someone had the guts to tell the feckless bunch in Washington, our elected politicians, that accountability is required in the spending of taxpayer money!!

This agency should have NEVER been created in the first place. At best, it should have always been an arm of the state department . That way they could have helped insure that they weren’t working against objectives of our policies of interaction with other countries, friend and foe.
