Latino voters’ support for Dems shrinks in new poll

Democrats now have a 21-point lead on Republicans among Latino voters — a lead that has slowly shrunk over the years, according to a new poll released Sunday, less than six weeks before the midterm elections.

The new NBC News/Telemundo poll was participated by 1,000 Latino registered voters. Fifty-four percent of responders said they preferred a Congress led by Democrats while 33 percent said they prefer a Republican-controlled Congress. Previous NBC polling shows the Dems’ lead has dropped significantly.

The Latino voters responding in the poll were identified to come from at least 20 Latino countries and territories, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.

The NBC poll reveals Latino voters back the GOP on border security and other issues like crime and the economy. The group largely support Democrats on issues like abortion, protecting constitutional rights, education and having the right approach to gun laws.

When it comes to issues regarding abortion, the Democrats also have a lead over Republicans — 50 percent to 23 percent. Abortion has become a major issue in this election cycle after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, according to the poll.

The survey also shows that about 30 percent of Latinos have a favorable view of the GOP, compared to a 49 percent favorability rating for Democrats.

Similarly, about 51 percent of Latino voters have a favorable view of President Joe Biden, compared to 30 percent for former President Donald Trump.

Conducted from Sept. 17 to Sept. 26, the NBC News/Telemundo poll has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
