Federal health officials have announced a substantial recall of over 40 fresh spinach products due to the detection of listeria.

Solata Foods LLC, a Newburgh, New York-based company, issued the recall. Their “Fresh Spinach” product was the primary focus of the recall owing to concerns about potential listeria contamination. Listeria is a harmful organism that can cause severe and potentially fatal infections.

“Listeria was found in a 9-ounce package of Bogopa fresh spinach during testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors, which was then confirmed by Food Laboratory personnel.”

Following this discovery, the company decided to cease production of this specific product. The spinach products, available in various sizes, were distributed to local retailers.

No illnesses related to the recall have been reported so far, but the company is advising consumers who purchased these products to return them for a refund.

“To date, no illnesses have been reported in relation to the recall, but consumers who have the product should return it for a refund,” the company stated.

Consuming food contaminated with listeria can lead to listeriosis, a serious infection. The symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the severity of the infection.

“Mild symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, individuals may experience headaches, a stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions,” the FDA states.

Listeriosis presents a significant risk to young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, potentially proving fatal. It also poses a danger to pregnant women, as an infection could lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.
