WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • New York Rep. George Santos has temporarily resigned from his committee positions to face legal and ethical reviews.
  • He said that the move was only temporary and that he will return once the issues are resolved.
  • He added that he decided to step down to eliminate distractions from his party’s plans.

Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) has been facing mounting pressure to resign from Congress ever since reports about his numerous lies emerged. After refusing to step down, he was even appointed to two House committees. But on Tuesday, he decided to temporarily recuse himself from his committee seats to face legal and ethical reviews.

Santos declared, “With the ongoing attention surrounding both my personal and campaign financial investigations, I have submitted a request to Speaker McCarthy that I be temporarily recused from my committee assignments until I am cleared. This was a decision that I take very seriously.”

Speaking at a news conference with House GOP leaders on Tuesday morning, House GOP conference chair Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) confirmed that Santos “voluntarily” stepped down from the House committees on Small Business and Science, Space, and Technology.

Santos resigned a day after he met with Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who called the decision “appropriate.”

Some analysts and academics found the move unusual.

Political science professor Gregory Wawro of Columbia University said that after Santos “has been so adamant about staying in office, basically dismissing his fabrications as embellishments,” the move to resign was “an unusual step.”

House Democratic Chair Pete Aguilar commented on “the chaos, confusion, dysfunction of the Republican conference” during a news conference with Democrat leaders on Tuesday. He stated, “They defended putting him on committees and now they’re announcing that he’s not going to serve on committees. I just don’t know what the play of the day is.”

Aside from calls to resign from both parties and a House Ethics Committee complaint, Santos is facing legal scrutiny about the source of his campaign finances.

That pressure has extended to House GOP leaders as they try to oust Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the Foreign Affairs Committee while seating Santos on two committees.

On Tuesday, Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) said that Omar may be seated on other committees but not on Foreign Affairs. He said that the GOP would not oppose her nomination but would move to vote her off.

Santos said that he temporarily stepped down so as to eliminate distractions from his party’s plans, which included ousting Omar.

Casey Burgat, director of the legislative affairs program at George Washington University, pointed out “He doesn’t have a lot of levers to pull to get the attention off him. Without resigning from Congress completely … pressure will continue to build.”

This looser stepped down because of Pressure, not because he’s making a sacrifice. What a puke and the pukes who elected him scrapped the bottom of the barrel. This is what you get from the twisted RINOS, liberal immoral pukes
