President Donald Trump granted a presidential pardon to the women’s suffrage movement leader Susan B. Anthony, who was detained because she voted in the 1872 election. During that time, the law states that only men are allowed to vote.

Trump signed the pardon at the White House on Tuesday afternoon which marked the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment ratification, also known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment.

Trump has attempted to fix some issues on his constituency and reinforced efforts on events that focused on women. He promoted a revitalized message on “law and order” and also launched a “Women for Trump” bus tour.

The president’s recent action was a response to the underwhelming support among suburban white women in key swing states. The negative reception from this group was believed to be a result of his big talk.

In recent years, visiting Anthony’s burial place in Rochester every Election Day has become quite a tradition. During the 2016 presidential election, thousands of people visited her tomb. In 2018, dozens of people came and put “I Voted” stickers on Anthony’s headstone.

Anthony was arrested for voting in her hometown of Rochester, New York. She became popular for her role in the movement to secure voting rights for women. Anthony was also known for being a voting right pioneer, aside from being an anti-slavery champion.

The 19th Amendment, which was passed in 1919 and was ratified on August 18, 1920, states that “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
