On August 22, Zarutska was traveling home from work when she was attacked on the train by a man in a red hoodie.

“She was always very helpful, very supportive and just had a heart of gold,” said family friend Lonnie.

“She was a sweetheart. And it makes me sick to think that she’s gone.”

Zepeddie’s Pizzeria honored her memory by keeping a candle lit and posting that, “We lost not only an incredible employee, but a true friend. Our dear Iryna left this world far too soon, and our hearts are heavy with grief.”

Decarlos Brown, the suspect, has a long criminal record including prior convictions and was released from prison in 2020, later facing additional charges. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder following the attack.
