While this crew will not land on the lunar surface, their work secures the foundation for future Americans to return to the moon after more than five decades.

“Artemis II is a test flight, and the test has just begun. The team that built this vehicle, repaired it, and prepared it for flight has given our crew the machine they need to go prove what it can do,” said NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya.

“Over the next 10 days, Reid, Victor, Christina, and Jeremy will put Orion through its paces so the crews who follow them can go to the Moon’s surface with confidence. We are one mission into a long campaign, and the work ahead of us is greater than the work behind us.”

The long-term strategy for NASA involves establishing permanent lunar bases to ensure a consistent American presence.

Development is also underway for the Space Reactor-1 Freedom, which will be the first nuclear-powered interplanetary craft launched toward Mars.

Earlier in the flight, the crew shared images of the Earth’s electric lights, highlighting the contrast between the glowing planet and the darkness of space.

These technical achievements demonstrate the ongoing dominance of American innovation in the final frontier.
