WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Joe Biden, attacked President Donald Trump for promoting claims of a suspicious doctor over COVID-19 treatment.
  • Biden’s criticism followed Trump’s earlier remark that he finds the woman doctor remarkable for treating coronavirus patients with hydroxychloroquine.
  • The doctor has no evidence that backups her claims that she treated 350 COVID-19 patients with the anti-malaria drug.

On Wednesday, Joe Biden criticized President Donald Trump for supporting on Twitter the highly questionable statements of Dr. Stella Immanuel, the doctor from Houston who claimed she treated several hundreds of coronavirus patients using hydroxychloroquine.

The former vice president called Dr. Immanuel, a foolish woman.

During a virtual conference sponsored by the Latino political power non-profit advocate UnidosUS Action Fund, Biden was asked to comment on Trump’s desire to reopen schools by the fall even with the absence of adequate measures to keep students and teachers free from harm.

In response, Biden said Trump should start working instead of just tweeting about the crisis, adding that the president should also stop posting about Dr. Immanuel.

Biden was referring to Trump’s comment on Tuesday night that she finds the doctor very remarkable, with a retweet a video clip that showed Immanuel claiming during a U.S. Capitol event that COVID-19 can be cured. The doctor added that the measures to curb the spread of the virus are needless and risky without any proof.

In the footage, the licensed pediatrician from Houston said she had efficiently cured  350 coronavirus patients by administering them with hydroxychloroquine. Her claim, however, was not backed up with data.

In the same video, Immanuel also criticized doctors who refuse to use hydroxychloroquine to treat their patients, adding that she thinks published studies about the virus are fake.

The social media platform then puts down the tweet and labeling it later on Tuesday as a violation of the company’s coronavirus misinformation policy.

Earlier, the FDA has cautioned against the use of hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus since the drug causes severe side effects. The drug typically used to mend malaria, according to studies, have shown almost no effects against COVID-19.

In May, Trump said that he was taking hydroxychloroquine so he won’t have the virus and maintained during a presser on Tuesday that he believes in the medicine.

Meanwhile, during his virtual conference on Wednesday,  Biden also flaunted his latest plan to fight racial discrimination in the United States by prioritizing assistance to the minority small-firm owners and creating more affordable homes for people of color.

“The future of America,” Biden said, “depends upon the total, full and thorough integration, acceptance and embrace of the Latino community.”

The former vice president’s event with UnidosUS, which recommended his presidential bid on Wednesday, came as his team published another Spanish-language advertisement shown in several TV markets and throughout all digital platforms in the states of Florida and Arizona.
