Capitol Officer Dunn Makes Another Congressional Bid

Clear Facts
- Former U.S. Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn is running for Congress in Maryland’s 5th District after losing a 2024 primary in the 3rd District.
- Dunn criticized ICE in a campaign video, comparing its agents to January 6 rioters and calling for the agency’s abolition.
- Incumbent Rep. Steny Hoyer will not seek re-election after over forty years representing Maryland’s 5th District.
Harry Dunn, who policed the Capitol during the events of January 6, 2021, has launched another campaign for Congress in a new district.
He previously failed to win the Democratic primary in Maryland’s 3rd District and aims for the 5th District seat this cycle with the incumbent stepping down.
“I will never forget that day. The shouting. The pounding. The sound of glass breaking. The shattering of American democracy. January 6 was violent, lawless. A lie turned into an attack,” Dunn declared in a campaign video.
“And Donald Trump lit the fuse. And he never put the match down.”
In his campaign message, Dunn directly linked the behavior of ICE agents to the events of January 6, expressing deep criticism toward both.
“I see the same aggression in ICE agents that I saw from January 6 insurrectionists. Unchecked force. American citizens murdered. And lies to cover it up,” he said.
Rep. Steny Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th District for over forty years and recently announced he will not run again.
Voters in Maryland will see a change in representation as Hoyer steps aside and new candidates vie for the seat.
