FCC Targets The View Over Equal Time Rule

Clear Facts

  • The FCC has launched an investigation into ABC’s “The View” for a possible violation of equal time rules for political candidates.
  • Texas Senate hopeful James Talarico appeared on the show without ABC submitting equal-time paperwork to the FCC.
  • The rule requires that all candidates receive comparable airtime, regardless of party.

The Federal Communications Commission is reviewing ABC’s handling of political candidate appearances on “The View,” with a focus on enforcing the statutory equal opportunities regulation.

The probe began after Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico was featured on the show, sparking concerns that the required equal time was not offered to other candidates.

An FCC source commented,

“Fake news is not getting a free pass anymore.”

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr stated,

“On my watch, we’re going to enforce this regulation.”

Under this federal rule, ABC must provide Republican Sen. John Cornyn and other Democratic candidates equal airtime if one is offered a segment.

A recent analysis found Talarico received just under 10 minutes, while his rival Jasmine Crockett had over 17 minutes during her previous visit to the program.

Media reviewers reported a significant disparity, with 128 liberal guests for political topics compared to only two conservatives since mid-2025.

During Talarico’s interview, co-host Whoopi Goldberg remarked,

“So you guys, you and Jasmine, you are in it. And I think regardless of who wins this particular way — race, Texas will be better for it.”

The investigation has sparked debate within the FCC itself. Commissioner Anna Gomez criticized the probe Friday, saying it aims to intimidate critics.

She asserted,

“The real purpose is to weaponize the FCC’s regulatory authority to intimidate perceived critics of this Administration and chill protected speech. That is not how a free society operates.”

ABC and Disney have not filed the necessary forms and appear to classify “The View” as exempt from equal-time rules.
