WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Following a series of official recertifying the state’s election results, Georgia is to reaffirm the victory of Joe Biden.
  • Under Georgia’s state law, a recount is allowed for lead margins within 0.5%  between the two candidates.
  • Despite lack of evidence, Trump repeatedly claimed there was widespread fraud in Georgia’s presidential race.

Top election officer from Georgia said his department is planning to certify the poll results again in the state on Monday following a verification requested by President Donald Trump showed that Joe Biden indeed won in the region.

During a media briefing at the Capitol, State Secretary Brad Raffensperger said that the valid ballots had been counted three times, and the results reaffirmed that Biden won.

A law in Georgia agrees to a losing candidate’s recount request as long as the margin between two runners is at 0.5%.  President Donald Trump asked for the recount when the numbers certified by Raffensperger indicated that Biden has a lead of 12,670 votes or 0.25% of the estimated 5 million casted ballots.

During the verification, which utilized scanners in reading and counting the votes, inconsistencies in the total number of ballots were found in some counties. And once the recount is over,

these become the official tally, and rectifying the results will be the next procedure.

The state secretary’s office had yet to wait for Coffee County, south of Georgia, on Monday for its results rectifying.  Once finished, the state secretary would continue to recertify the statewide outcomes before the governor can reconfirm the 16 presidential electors’ slate in its jurisdiction.

The recent recount was the third time votes were verified in the state’s presidential race. After Election Day’s initial count, Raffensperger chose the presidential selection to audit as mandated by the state’s law. A manual recount is also the required method if a tight margin was observed, and it would set the audit for the approximately 5 million votes.

That recount also certified Biden’s win.

In the last few weeks, Trump has frequently claimed massive fraud in Georgia’s presidential race,  lambasting both Raffensperger and Gov. Brian Kemp, both fellow GOP. Raffensperger, meanwhile, has maintained that the election in the state is secured, and Kemp has assured that he has no authority to interfere with the votes.

During a news conference on Monday, Raffensperger said that factual evidence showed no irregularities in the last presidential election.

Few moments before arriving in Georgia for a Saturday night rally, Trump asked Kemp to call for a special session, but the governor did not comply.

On Sunday, Trump criticized Kemp and Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan for their alleged inaction, and via Twitter, the president called again for a special session.

Following four Republican state legislators’ call on Sunday for a special session, Duncan and Kemp released a statement saying that arranging a special session to choose another slate of presidential electors will violate federal or state laws.
