  • In a special election held on Saturday, Julia Letlow won a Louisiana congressional seat — replacing her late husband.
  • Letlow is the third woman from Louisiana to have been elected to the House of Representatives.

Republican Julia Letlow, who was endorsed by former US President Donald Trump, has won a Louisiana congressional seat in a special election that was held on Saturday, March 20th. She replaced her late husband, who died from coronavirus-related complications in December 2020.

President Trump congratulated her on Sunday, saying, “Congratulations to Julia Letlow on her BIG win in Louisiana! Despite running in a field with a dozen candidates, no runoff election is necessary because she received 65% of the vote – an incredible victory. I am thrilled for Julia and the entire Letlow family. Luke is looking down proudly from above.”

Letlow’s pro-life stance and her position on “Crime, the Border … our Military, our Vets, and … our cherished Second Amendment” is what made the former president endorse the elect-Representative.

Letlow, who beat 11 challengers for the congressional seat, said in a statement, “This is an incredible moment, and it is truly hard to put into words. What was born out of the terrible tragedy of losing my husband, Luke, has become my mission in his honor to carry the torch and serve the good people of Louisiana’s 5th District.”

Not only was it her first bid for office, but Letlow is also the third woman from Louisiana to have ever been elected to the House of Representatives.

Aside from the advantage of raising massive funds, Letlow was given support by former President Trump, the state GOP, and Republican Representatives Kevin McCarthy of California, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the No. 2 Republican in the chamber, and the House minority leader.
