President Donald Trump officially tapped Dr. Erica Schwartz on Thursday to serve as the next director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The nomination signals a major shift toward reforming a federal agency that faced deep criticism for its handling of public health mandates.

The President praised Schwartz as an incredibly talented leader with a distinguished medical career in the United States Military. He noted her prior service as Deputy Surgeon General during his first term as a key qualification for the role.

“Erica graduated from Brown University for College and Medical School, and served a distinguished career as a Doctor of Medicine in the United States Military, the Greatest and Most Powerful Force in the World, and then served as my Deputy Surgeon General during my First Term. She is a STAR!”

Trump also announced appointments for Sean Slovenski, Dr. Jennifer Shuford, and Dr. Sara Brenner to fill critical leadership spots within the CDC and HHS. These professionals will work alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to overhaul agency operations.

The President stated that these medical professionals possess the expertise required to restore the gold standard of science at an agency he described as a disaster under the previous administration.

Schwartz served as Deputy Surgeon General from 2019 to 2021, providing her with direct experience in managing nationwide public health deployment. Her appointment comes after a period of leadership transitions following the departure of the former director in late 2025.
