The National Weather Service warned, “The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 8 above zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.”
They also stated, “Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. … Young children, the elderly and the homeless are especially vulnerable to the cold.”
Popular locations such as Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Universal’s Volcano Bay closed their water parks due to record cold, while Zoo Miami limited animal exhibits for their safety.
Even Georgia’s leading attractions like the Georgia Aquarium and Atlanta Botanical Garden closed during the deep freeze.
In North Carolina, the Ringling Bros. circus canceled shows following a local state of emergency and snow warnings.
In Myrtle Beach, the annual Polar Plunge event was canceled out of safety concerns, but donations to the Special Olympics are still accepted.
The event’s website urged, “We strongly encourage everyone to stay home, stay warm and stay safe while this storm moves through our area.”
Braves Fest in Atlanta was also canceled, with organizers citing hazardous travel and freezing temperatures.
A statement on the Atlanta Braves’ website read, “We were very excited to celebrate with the more than 76,000 fans who had claimed tickets for the event. However, given the anticipated impact throughout our region, we want to ensure [the safety of our fans] who were planning to travel from near and far for the event.”
The New York Racing Association suspended all live racing at Aqueduct Racetrack, maintaining only simulcast betting operations.
Connecticut’s Penguin Plunge, a fundraiser by the local police for Special Olympics Connecticut, was postponed because of the extreme cold.
Despite the cancellations, organizers encouraged supporters to continue making donations online.
