WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY.) reported for work on Thursday and asserted that he is healthy despite having both hands discolored and covered with bandages.
  • It is not clear whether McConnell had contracted COVID-19 or if he was taking blood thinners given his condition.
  • The Senate will push forward with Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation despite strong criticisms from Democrats.

With both hands and lips appearing discolored in deep purple, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY.) reported for duty on Thursday and told reporters that he was in good condition.

As his knuckles were covered with bandages and his mouth looked bruised, McConnell rebuked a reporter who asked him if there was anything he should share about his health.

“But I’m serious, is there anything going on we should know about?” a reporter asked McConnell Thursday in an off-cam conversation, to which he responded: “Of course, not.”

McConnell, 78, has faced questions regarding his health as both President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden were also confronted with the same queries. Trump is now 74 years old while Biden is 77.

Speculations emerge as McConnell is suspected to have been infected with COVID-19 following the virus outbreak at the White House earlier this month. Others suggest that he was taking blood thinners or experiencing another illness.

The issue on McConnell’s health came following his decision to hold a floor vote on Monday to confirm Trump’s nominee, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, to the Supreme Court.

On early Thursday, Judiciary Committee Chair Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) moved forward with the proceedings as McConnell will bring Barrett’s nomination to the Senate floor on Friday.

Senate Democrat committee members boycotted Thursday’s hearing and instead, held a press conference outside Capitol Hill to protest the move.

Barrett’s confirmation would proceed as planned and despite strong opposition from Democrats, GOP could still get enough votes as they dominate the Senate in terms of numbers.
