WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut plan to implement quarantine for visitors from states with surging coronavirus cases.
  • NY Governor Andrew Cuomo commented the move was to prevent further spread of COVID-19 in areas where the infection rate has slowed down.
  • Cuomo added that the recent spike in infections from other states only shows that New York’s move to take time in reopening was right.

Governors of states New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York,  said on Wednesday that visitors from COVID-19 hotspots who would like to enter the region would have to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo explained that states such as Texas, Utah, Arkansas, Florida, Alabama, North and South Carolina,  and Washington still have high contagion rates to still require the coronavirus quarantine recommendation.

Those who were residents of the said states are not being restricted from going to New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut, so the response on Wednesday is mostly advisory.

Through a remote conference led by Cuomo in Albany, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy told reporters that the people experience a terrible health crisis and want to avoid another wave as the risk of being infected is still there.

Cuomo clarified that the nine South and Midwest states are now under quarantine list as per the basis from a rolling, weekly average of accurate contagion rates.

The NY governor added that mentioned states could adjust themselves as the number of cases declines, noting that they will have a daily update on the list of areas with a high infection rate.

He also clarified that advisory is essential to the community, adding that they also seek to help states with grooving numbers in infections.

It was early on Wednesday that Gov. Cuomo implied plans of having the quarantine.

In an interview with the “Today” show of the NBC, he said that they intend to keep the infection from other regions away from their cities. During the interview, he added that while his state may have a low infection rate now, they are worried about people from other places who would bring the infection by coming to New York.

New York City was the epicenter of COVID-19 mainly during March and April. Following long periods of closing down businesses, the number of coronavirus cases and deaths have significantly dropped.

Cuomo then criticized states that seemed to rush its reopening plans. He told “Today” recently that those who did not wait are now facing severe problems with the upsurge of infection rates.

The governor further said the recent increase of coronavirus cases in Arizona, Florida, Texas, and the other 23 states only indicates that his decision to delay the opening of New York was a smart move.
