In a significant move to ensure public health safety, BrucePac has recalled almost 10 million pounds of its ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. This decision stems from concerns over potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause the infection listeriosis.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued an alert regarding this recall, emphasizing the health risks associated with listeriosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the infection “primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns,” and can be “rare, but serious.”

Symptoms of listeriosis can range from “fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions,” often following gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of adverse reactions linked to the BrucePac products thus far.

The recalled products were distributed to various restaurants and institutions across the nation. The FSIS has advised these establishments to refrain from serving or using the affected products.

“These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the FSIS stated.

The potential contamination was identified during routine FSIS testing of finished products containing ready-to-eat poultry from BrucePac. The testing confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

The production of these recalled items occurred over a period from June 19 to October 8. BrucePac, on its website, assures that “food safety always has been, and always will be, a top priority.”

This recall highlights the ongoing vigilance required in food safety and the importance of routine testing to prevent potential health risks.
