Ravens Owner Reacts to Tomlin’s Departure Shock
Clear Facts
- Mike Tomlin stepped down as the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach after 19 seasons.
- Steve Bisciotti, Ravens owner, expressed surprise at Tomlin’s exit and discussed the unusual prospect of coaching swaps with reporters.
- Both Tomlin and John Harbaugh, previously top-tenured NFL coaches, are no longer with their teams as of this week.
Steve Bisciotti was visibly shocked during a Tuesday press conference when informed of Mike Tomlin’s decision to leave the Steelers after 19 years.
“Holy sh*t!” Bisciotti exclaimed when a reporter asked if Tomlin would be a candidate in Baltimore.
He joked about the possibility of rival coaches switching teams, saying, “Would that be awesome? Only if John takes the Pittsburgh job. Wow, wouldn’t that be interesting?”
Tomlin’s resignation makes coaching swaps between the Ravens and Steelers a technical possibility, though Bisciotti lightheartedly referenced Baltimore’s recent loss to Pittsburgh as a hurdle.
“I don’t know, that thing last week, maybe disqualified him from my opening,” Bisciotti said jokingly.
Both Tomlin and John Harbaugh, who left the Ravens after 18 seasons, are now out of the league.
Tomlin reflected on his time in Pittsburgh, stating, “After much thought and reflection, I have decided to step down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. This organization has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honor to lead this team. I am deeply grateful to Art Rooney II and the late Ambassador Rooney for their trust and support. I am also thankful to the players who gave everything they had every day, and to the coaches and staff whose commitment and dedication made this journey so meaningful. I want to also thank Steeler Nation. Your passion, loyalty, and high expectations represent what makes this franchise truly special.”
The Steelers are set to hire only their fourth head coach since 1969, continuing a rare tradition of stability in the NFL.
Tomlin, hired in 2007, led the Steelers to a Super Bowl win in 2009 and secured eight division titles, never recording a losing season.
Steelers president Art Rooney II offered praise, saying, “During our meeting today, Coach Tomlin informed me that he has decided to step down as our Head Coach. Obviously, I am extremely grateful to Mike for all the hard work, dedication and success we have shared over the last 19 years. It is hard for me to put into words the level of respect and appreciation I have for Coach Tomlin. He guided the franchise to our sixth Super Bowl championship and made the playoffs 13 times during his tenure, including winning the AFC North eight times in his career.”
Tomlin’s next step remains unknown, with reports mentioning his interest in possibly coaching in a warmer climate or becoming a TV analyst.
Steelers leadership recognized Tomlin’s exceptional legacy, including his unbroken record of winning seasons.
“His track record of never having a losing season in 19 years will likely never be duplicated,” Rooney II said.
Stay tuned as NFL fans and insiders alike speculate about the possibility of unprecedented coaching changes between top rivals.
