  • The SAVE America Act would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote.
  • Current law does not demand proof of citizenship for federal voter registration.
  • Polls show overwhelming public support for voter ID and citizenship requirements across all major demographics.

The SAVE America Act aims to strengthen election integrity by amending existing law to require documentary evidence of citizenship during voter registration. Supporters argue that this measure addresses a core vulnerability in the electoral process.

Currently, federal voter registration relies solely on applicants attesting to citizenship without mandatory documentation. This has led to concerns about the security of American elections.

As one stated, “Only American citizens should decide American elections – full stop.”

A mid-July 2025 survey commissioned by Tea Party Patriots Action found that 83% of likely voters agree proof of citizenship should be required to register. Support extends across the political spectrum, with 92% of Republicans, 82% of Independents, and 73% of Democrats in agreement.

Racial demographics in the survey revealed 94% of white voters, 72% of Hispanic voters, and 63% of black voters support citizenship requirements for voter registration. These results point to a consensus among diverse Americans.

Another key safeguard in the legislation is the requirement for voters to show photo identification at the polls. According to the same poll, 79% of voters favor ID requirements when voting.

Support for voter ID also appears broad, with 89% of Republicans, 76% of Independents, and 70% of Democrats in favor. Among racial groups, 89% of white, 69% of Hispanic, and 62% of black voters support this measure.

A separate Pew Research Center poll in August 2025 found that 83% of Americans back government-issued photo ID to vote, including 95% of Republicans and 71% of Democrats.

As highlighted, “This is simply about protecting the civil right that makes all the others possible: a legitimate vote cast by an eligible American.”

Proponents view the SAVE America Act as a necessary and unifying step to ensure that only eligible citizens determine election outcomes. Many conservatives believe that making proof of citizenship and ID standard is a reasonable, common-sense approach.

Americans are showing clear support for election security, and many urge Congress to act swiftly to align the law with this consensus.
