“The nuclear family is under attack in our beloved State and nation, and it is our responsibility to uplift, protect, and support values that help Tennessee prosper,” the resolution adds.
The move has drawn criticism from advocacy groups that claim legislative definitions of family units are exclusionary. These organizations argue that lawmakers should avoid drafting resolutions that they believe create divisions among various types of households.
“The strongest families are grounded in love, not legislative definitions. It is disturbing to see lawmakers use their platform to intentionally exclude their own constituents,” one organization stated.
This legislative action occurs as other regions in the country focus on different cultural celebrations. In New York City, local officials recently celebrated the restoration of specific flags at federal monuments following legal settlements.
“This is a victory for the LGBTQ+ community and for our entire city,” a New York official posted.
