WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed his dismay against the late senator John McCain’s wife, Cindy, for her endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
  • Cindy McCain highlighted her friendship with the Bidens over the decades and their similarity as parents with children who are serving in the military.
  • Trump repeatedly insulted the late 2008 GOP presidential nominee in his remarks.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump slammed Cindy McCain, the widow of late Arizona Senator John McCain, for publicly endorsing Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

“I hardly know Cindy McCain other than having put her on a Committee at her husband’s request,” the president wrote on Twitter

“Joe Biden was John McCain’s lapdog. So many BAD decisions on Endless Wars & the V.A., which I brought from a horror show to HIGH APPROVAL. Never a fan of John. Cindy can have Sleepy Joe!” he continued.

McCain announced her support on Wednesday at various morning TV news programs, of which Trump is a regular viewer.

McCain cited her long-standing friendship with Biden and their parental bond of having children in the military.

“He supports the troops and knows what it means for someone who has served,” McCain said. “Not only to love someone who has served, but understands what it means to send a child into combat. We’ve been great friends for many years, but we have a common thread in that we are Blue Star families.”

“I decided to take a stand,” she added. “You may have to step out of your comfort zone a little bit, but Biden is by far the best candidate in the race.”

John McCain has been repeatedly disparaged by Trump before. In 2015, the president reportedly said that the 2008 GOP presidential nominee “was not a war hero because he was captured” during the war.

Before becoming a politician, John McCain was a Navy pilot who got captured by the Vietnamese. He was held captive for over five years.

In 2018, with a dramatic thumbs-down gesture, McCain voted against nullifying President Barack Obama’s health care law, which Trump wanted to terminate. The late senator’s stand had angered Trump.

Trump has frequently poked fun at McCain’s ‘thumbs down’ expression in his rallies. In 2018, the president was not invited to the late Arizona senator’s funeral.

On Tuesday evening in a fundraiser event, Biden said he was anticipating Cindy McCain’s endorsement following Trump’s recent derogatory remarks against fallen American soldiers.

“He talks about how my son and John and others who are heroes, who served their country,” Biden told donors. “You know, he said they’re ‘losers, suckers.’”
