The Trump administration plans to advocate for updates to the United Nations’ asylum framework at the upcoming annual General Assembly. Officials argue that the existing rules enable exploitation and encourage dangerous migration practices that undermine national sovereignty.

A State Department spokesperson stated, “The United States plans to begin a conversation on reforming an outdated, decades-old system that has long been abused by bad actors and economic migrants to fuel the global migration crisis.”

Proposed changes would require migrants to seek protection in the first safe country they reach, rather than choosing any destination. Authorities emphasize that every nation has a right to secure its borders, and no one is guaranteed asylum in a country of their choosing.

The spokesperson added that asylum should remain temporary, and sovereign states must determine when individuals can safely return home. All countries are also expected to accept back their own citizens.

Millions of refugees have reached Europe in recent years, and nations such as Germany have experienced social unrest as a result. Germany now has roughly 3 million refugees in a population of 83 million as of 2024, according to the UN.

The administration’s stance aligns with President Trump’s broader agenda to strengthen American asylum standards and assert national sovereignty. His executive order from January 2025 temporarily halted the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, citing the need to ensure resource availability, public safety, and effective assimilation.

“Cities and small towns alike, from Charleroi, Pennsylvania, and Springfield, Ohio, to Whitewater, Wisconsin, have seen significant influxes of migrants,” Trump wrote in the order.

“The United States lacks the ability to absorb large numbers of migrants, and in particular, refugees, into its communities in a manner that does not compromise the availability of resources for Americans, that protects their safety and security, and that ensures the appropriate assimilation of refugees,” the order continued.

The administration will soon set the refugee admissions cap for 2026. Over 100,000 refugees entered the U.S. in 2024 under prior leadership, a three-decade high.

President Trump also spotlighted the plight of Afrikaners, a minority of Dutch descent facing severe persecution in South Africa. In May, he signed an order supporting their resettlement; several Afrikaner families have since arrived in America.
