“No serious injuries” for Zelensky after car crash in Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was involved in a car crash but did not sustain any major injury, his spokesman said on Thursday.

Zelenskyy’s press secretary, Sergii Nykyforov, said that a doctor who examined the president after the crash found “no serious injuries.”

The driver of the car that crashed into the president’s motorcade was given “emergency aid” by the medics who were part of the group. He was later put in an ambulance.

Nykyforov did not speculate on the cause of the crash, but stated that the Ukrainian police are looking into it.

According to Nykyforov, the crash occurred in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. Zelenskyy later said that they were returning to Kyiv after visiting a newly reclaimed territory in Kharkiv.

On Tuesday, Zelenskyy said that the Ukraine forces retook about 1,500 square miles (4,000 square kilometers) during the weekend’s counteroffensive.

When Zelenskyy shared a video address on Thursday, he said that he returned from a trip to Izyum, one of the retaken cities, to thank soldiers on the front line. He also shared photos of his visit. He did not mention the crash.

The president stated, “As of today, almost the entire region is de-occupied. It was an unprecedented movement of our warriors.”

The Ukrainian president has been making risky trips to meet with Ukrainian troops, in contrast to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is yet to be documented visiting his troops.

Zelenskyy made the trip despite the risk of assassination, considering that he acknowledged being Putin’s “No.1 target” since the war started.

Around 400 mercenaries have been dispatched to Kyiv to assassinate him in February, according to the Times of London. In April, there was a deadly gas attack and a missile strike as Russian forces neared Kyiv.
