Browns Add Third Young QB in Two Years as Cleveland’s Quarterback Chaos Continues

Clear Facts
- Cleveland Browns selected Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft
- The Browns now have three young quarterbacks drafted in consecutive years: Dillon Gabriel (2025, third round), Shedeur Sanders (2025, fifth round), and Taylen Green (2026, sixth round)
- Deshaun Watson’s $230 million contract expires after this season, with the Browns openly expressing regret over the deal
The Cleveland Browns have made another addition to their increasingly crowded quarterback room, selecting Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green in the sixth round of this year’s draft. This marks the third consecutive year Cleveland has invested draft capital in the position while managing one of the most expensive quarterback disasters in NFL history.
Just one year after selecting both Dillon Gabriel in the third round and Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round, the Browns have added yet another young arm to the mix. The move raises serious questions about the team’s confidence in their previous selections and their long-term vision at the sport’s most critical position.
Cleveland’s quarterback situation has been nothing short of chaotic. Last season, Week 1 starter Joe Flacco was traded mid-season so the team could evaluate their younger talent. Kenny Pickett, acquired in the previous offseason, was also dealt away before the season began.
Gabriel initially earned the starting role after Flacco’s departure but lost it following a concussion. Sanders stepped in and won his first NFL start, maintaining the position for the remainder of the season. However, his performance did little to inspire confidence in the organization’s future at the position.
The quarterback play in Cleveland was abysmal throughout the 2025 season regardless of who took snaps. The Browns ranked 31st in the league in completion percentage at just 57.89% and dead last in passing yards per game at 165.1. These numbers represent a complete failure of offensive execution at the professional level.
Perhaps most significantly, Deshaun Watson’s catastrophic $230 million contract will finally expire after this season. The Browns have openly admitted their regret over the massive trade and deal, restructuring his contract for a third time in roughly a year last month. The Watson era stands as one of the most disastrous front office decisions in recent NFL history.
While Sanders appears to be the frontrunner for the Week 1 starting job, he did not separate himself from the competition last season. The addition of Green signals that Cleveland views the quarterback competition as wide open heading into training camp.
Green brings intriguing credentials from his college career. In four seasons as a starter at both Boise State and Arkansas, he completed 60.1% of his passes for 9,662 yards, 59 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. He led the SEC with 13.7 yards per completion this past season and topped the Mountain West in that category (14.5) in 2023.
He threw a career-high 19 touchdowns for the Razorbacks this past season, demonstrating development and upside that clearly caught Cleveland’s attention.
The Browns’ approach reflects a team desperate to find answers at quarterback after years of mismanagement and failed investments. Whether Green represents a genuine solution or simply another addition to an already overcrowded room remains to be seen.
