Giants Star Nabers Openly Questions Team’s Draft Strategy During Live Broadcast

Clear Facts
- New York Giants selected Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese at No. 5 despite already having four linebackers on the roster
- Star wide receiver Malik Nabers publicly questioned both first-round picks during a live simulcast, expressing frustration that safety Caleb Downs was passed over twice
- The Giants selected offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa at No. 10 instead of addressing their depleted secondary after trading defensive star Dexter Lawrence
The New York Giants raised eyebrows throughout the football world Thursday night with a series of draft decisions that left even their own star wide receiver questioning the front office’s strategy on live television. Malik Nabers didn’t hold back his confusion during a simulcast with Green Bay Packers linebacker Micah Parsons.
The drama began before the picks were even announced. Former co-owner Steve Tisch appeared in the team’s war room as New York prepared to make its second selection of the evening. Tisch had previously transferred his ownership stakes to his family after his name surfaced in the Jeffrey Epstein files, though reports indicate he remains “still involved” with the organization.
With the fifth overall pick, the Giants were positioned to address their glaring need in the secondary. The franchise hasn’t had a dominant safety since Shaun Williams patrolled the defensive backfield in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Ohio State safety Caleb Downs was available and widely considered a perfect fit.
Instead, New York selected Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese, an All-American and 2025 Big Ten Linebacker of the Year. While Reese’s talent is undeniable, the choice puzzled observers given the Giants already roster four linebackers: Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Terrell Edmunds.
Nabers didn’t hide his frustration during the live broadcast.
“Love the player, don’t get me wrong. But where do you play? He is going to want to be on the outside to rush but we just drafted somebody last year to do that same position.”
The Giants held the 10th selection as well after trading defensive star Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals. Downs remained on the board, offering a second opportunity to shore up the depleted secondary. Once again, the front office went in a different direction.
New York selected Miami offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa, reportedly planning to convert him from tackle to guard. Nabers again voiced his concerns publicly.
“I would rather get him then play against him … I’m just saying that Downs was there twice. The reason why I said Caleb Downs … is because we just traded [Dexter Lawrence], you need interior D line — I understand getting outside backer he wants to rush OK — but when you eliminate something from there you, have to put something in the back end to be secure.”
Downs ultimately fell to the Dallas Cowboys at No. 12, meaning Nabers will face him twice annually in the NFC East. The Washington Commanders also selected former Ohio State star Sonny Styles, further strengthening division rivals while the Giants passed on defensive help.
As the draft concluded and his comments gained traction, Nabers attempted to clarify his remarks on social media.
“First off, we have to stop overreacting. I would never intentionally take away from the biggest moment/night of Arvell’s life. Very excited to see him play on the team and happy that we have another dawg on the squad!”
The incident highlights ongoing questions about the Giants’ decision-making process. While Nabers walked back his criticism, his initial reaction reflected the confusion many fans share about a franchise that continues to struggle with roster construction and strategic planning.
