WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Three U.S. tourists were found dead in their rental apartment in Mexico City.
  • The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office has released the results of their investigation which indicate carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of their deaths.
  • The three tourists were staying in an Airbnb for the celebration of Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos.

Results of the Mexico City Attorney General’s office’s investigation have confirmed that carbon monoxide poisoning is the reason behind the death of three U.S. tourists in Mexico City.

The victims, identified as Kandace Florence, Jordan Marshall and Courtez Hall were staying at an Airbnb called La Rosita for the Day of the Dead holiday.  They were found dead at the apartment they were renting in the Cuajimalpa borough near the upscale Santa Fe business district last October 30.

The tragedy comes as deadly incidents from gas leaks involving tourists have plagued Mexico.

A gas leak explosion in March injured 18 and killed two people in a restaurant in Playa del Carmen.

A family of four also suffocated to death from a gas leak in a vacation condominium in Akumal.

The capital city has become popular for visitors and potential residents as the government has recently signed an agreement with Airbnb to invite “digital nomads” to the city.

The short-term rental site said that the deaths of the three tourists staying in one of their sites were a “terrible tragedy”. Any inquiries from the authorities will be readily acted on by the company.

The US Embassy still has to comment on the incident involving American tourists.
