WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices revealed that it was analyzing a few reports of heart inflammation occurrences among vaccinated Americans.
  • The cases were predominantly male, from puberty up to young adult stage.
  • The CDC said that the condition usually manifests within four days after the mRNA vaccination.

Advisory group from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that numerous teenagers and young adults who had been administered with COVID-19 vaccines exhibited heart inflammation, suggesting that such occurrences would need to be studied further.

In a statement on May 17, the agency’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices said that it reviewed reports about some young vaccinated individuals ━ largely male in adolescent and young adult stages ━ who acquired an inflammation of the heart muscle called myocarditis.

The ailment, which could likely be caused by the presence of viruses in one’s body, usually goes off without any complication.

In the statement, the committee said that CDC monitoring systems did not find ample cases in accordance with the vaccinated populations, but noted that the healthcare sectors should be notified about the “potential adverse event” following the inoculation.

The statement, though, did not disclose the figures of actual cases and just recommended that it should undergo further research.

John Hopkins Center for Health Security senior scholar Dr. Amesh Adalja said that vaccines typically yield myocarditis, adding that it’s important to establish if the inflammation is related to the vaccine. He also said that it would be paramount to determine the risk-benefit ratio.

“Vaccines are going to unequivocally be much more beneficial outweighing this very low, if conclusively established, risk,” Adalja continued.

Last month, Israel’s Health Ministry announced that it was receiving few incidents of heart inflammation cases among people who were vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Accordingly, the bulk of the incidents were predominantly young adults (ages 30).

When the Israeli Health Ministry announced the news back then, the CDC did not observe a direct link between the vaccine and the condition.

At the time, Pfizer said it did not register an expected adequate number of cases given the massive population, adding that the causal relation of the vaccine and the condition was indefinite.

Both Pfizer and Moderna, which developed the mRNA vaccines, have yet to provide comment from requests made Saturday.

Per the CDC, the condition usually manifests within four days after obtaining the mRNA vaccines. The agency did not indicate which vaccines yielded heart inflammation.
