WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • After lifting lockdown measures, some U.S states seemed to be facing the second wave of coronavirus infections.
  • A month ago,  Florida was amongst the first states which lifted its coronavirus restrictions, but it recorded the highest sudden spike in the number of cases this week.
  • In Texas, COVID-19 hospitalizations increased by 6.3 percent, bringing the numbers to 2,056 on Tuesday, accounting for the highest rise in a day since the outbreak started.

Weeks after reopening, what likely be the second wave of coronavirus has hit some states, with the number of infections surging in Texas, Florida, and Arizona, says a report on Wednesday.

Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security’s Eric Toner told Bloomberg News that a small and distant new COVID-19 wave was felt in some areas in the country, noting though it was far, it’s still imminent.

Bloomberg further reported that Florida listed 8,553, the latest cases of the bug this week alone, and this marks the highest number of infections on a seven-day-period in the state. It was only a  month ago when Florida eased up its coronavirus measures.

The outlet also said that a similar scenario happened in Texas, where COVID-19 hospitalizations increased by 6.3 percent, bringing the numbers to 2,056 on Tuesday, which accounts for the highest rise in a day since the outbreak started.

On June 2 in Arizona, a record high of 1,187 patients was tested positive with the deadly disease.

While the country’s overall number of cases seemed to be declining, the recent spike made authorities worry about the situation, with Jeffrey Morris, University of Pennsylvania’s biostatistics director, saying the record from Arizona is an additional concern to the health crisis.

Experts said, though, that they still yet find out why some states were facing the second wave coronavirus, while other areas haven’t encountered the problem.

California, for instance, was the earliest to implement lockdown following a and initial outbreak around the San Francisco area, and it was one of the last to open again. Yet, the number of coronavirus cases recorded in the state this week was at a peak, at least since May 13.

The authorities were puzzled when they compared the data in Georgia, where shops, tattoo salons, and gyms have resumed their operations for more than a month ago. Still, the number of people who contracted the virus has dropped consistently.

Mainly, the country’s contagion rate this week went up by 1 percent only, which was the lowest increase from the time when the cases are just minimal in March.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force said it hadn’t seen the direct correlation between states reopening and increased cases of COVID-19.
