Rex Heuermann admitted in court to the strangulation and dismemberment of multiple women over a decades-long killing spree. The plea deal brings a measure of justice to a case that haunted the Long Island community for years.
Prosecutors said a computer in Heuermann’s basement vault contained what they described as a blueprint for the serial murders.
Detectives also recovered nearly 300 weapons from his residence following his arrest last year.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” his ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, stated after the court appearance.
“Their loss is immeasurable and the focus should be on them at this time and moment. I ask that you give some privacy to my family as they navigate through this difficult time,” she continued.
The plea agreement includes the formal admission of killing Karen Vergata in addition to seven other named victims. Heuermann is now required to cooperate with federal investigators as he begins serving his consecutive life sentences.
