Gunman’s deadly rampage ends in New Hampshire manhunt

Clear Facts
- Matthew J. Masse was killed Sunday after a gunfight with authorities following the shootings of a police officer and members of his family.
- The incident began Saturday in Raymond when the 38-year-old suspect allegedly used a long gun to wound a Nottingham Police Department officer.
- A massive manhunt ended late Saturday night when State Police located Masse, who was found deceased after exchanging fire with responding units.
New Hampshire authorities launched an extensive search Saturday afternoon after Matthew J. Masse allegedly opened fire on his relatives and a responding officer.
The shooting prompted road closures and a mandatory shelter-in-place order as K-9 units and multiple agencies combed the wooded area near Ham Road.
The suspect was already wanted on active felony warrants for an attempted arson at his family’s residence earlier in the week.
The wounded officer was transported to a hospital with injuries that officials confirmed were non-life-threatening.
“There was an exchange of gunfire between Mr. Masse with his rifle and the officers,” the state Attorney General’s Office said.
“Following that exchange, Mr. Masse was found deceased by officers when they approached his location.”
State Police confirmed that Masse was located around 10:06 p.m. and his long gun was recovered at the scene.
No other officers or civilians were harmed during the final confrontation, and the public threat has been resolved.
Official protocol requires that the names of the officers involved remain withheld until formal interviews are completed.
An autopsy is scheduled for the coming days to officially determine the cause and manner of the suspect’s death.
