  • Gerhardt Konig, a Hawaii anesthesiologist, was found guilty of attempted manslaughter after a violent assault on his wife during an Oahu hiking trip.
  • The jury chose the lesser charge after hearing testimony about extreme mental or emotional disturbance tied to alleged marital infidelity.
  • Prosecutors said Konig researched remote hiking spots and searched terms like “kill” and “cliff” before the attack.

The victim testified that Konig tried to push her off a ledge and struck her repeatedly with a rock before hikers intervened.

Witnesses described chaos on the Pali Puka Trail, where the defendant allegedly used a medical syringe during the struggle.

Bystanders later found the victim bloodied and clinging to vegetation to keep from falling over the cliffside.

The defense described the incident as an unplanned scuffle sparked by discovery of an affair.

Konig testified that he acted in self-defense after his wife initiated the confrontation.

“I resorted to violence against my wife… the person I love the most,” Konig told the court during his testimony.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 13, and he remains in custody after the trial.
