Jurors viewed chilling interrogation video where former FedEx driver Tanner Horner detailed the disposal of 7-year-old Athena Strand’s body.
The suspect told investigators he just kind of tossed her into the woods after the abduction.
The trial reveals Horner initially claimed he struck the girl with his truck but later admitted to a deliberate strangulation.
Prosecutors described a calculated and violent attack involving professional equipment and a web of lies to cover the crime.
“First thing Tanner Horner says to Athena when he picks her up, puts her in that truck, leans down, and he says, ‘Don’t scream or I’ll hurt you,’”
Prosecutor James Stainton told jurors.
Stainton highlighted the young victim’s struggle, noting that forensic evidence showed the suspect’s DNA under the girl’s fingernails and in other locations.
The prosecution emphasized that the child fought with the strength of a warrior before her death.
“I’m going to tell you right now. One thing you’re going to hear that is something you can’t unhear is the level of fight that a 7-year-old girl has. When she’s facing down a certain death.”
After the murder, Horner allegedly returned to his route and continued delivering packages while the community searched for the missing child.
Defense attorneys argued that brain damage and mental illness should mitigate his sentence to life without parole.
The tragedy began when Horner delivered a Christmas gift of Barbie dolls to the residence in Paradise, Texas.
Authorities eventually recovered the child’s body less than 10 miles from the home following a massive volunteer search effort.
