WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Donald Trump’s July 4th speech was greeted by protests outside the White House, where leftist groups burned the American flag.
  • Footage showed that the protesters were heard shouting “One, two, three, four, slavery, genocide and war. Five, six, seven, eight, America was never great.”
  • Trump has criticized the protesters he described as the “radical left” in his address, saying that he will defeat them.

Moments after his speech at the “Salute to America” Independence Day celebration, President Donald Trump was welcomed by leftist groups burning an American flag near the White House while shouting “America was never great.”

A video footage displayed the flag being set to fire at the Black Lives Matter Plaza, located outside the White House. Protesters were shouting “One, two, three, four, slavery, genocide and war. Five, six, seven, eight, America was never great.”

The Revolutionary Communist Party initiated the burning of the flag while the Refuse Fascism group spearheaded a speak-out. The Refuse Fascism also held a nationwide strike calling for the ousting of Trump and Vice President Mike Pence from the White House. On its website, the group said that they created a Trump statue and had it destroyed outside the Trump Tower in New York.

Trump criticized the leftist groups during his speech.

“We are now in the process of defeating the radical left, the Marxists, the anarchists, the agitators, the looters and people who in many instances have absolutely no clue what they are doing,” he said.

He also strongly condemned the burning of the country’s flag and said that those who burned it should be jailed — although based on the Supreme Court ruling in the 1989 case Texas v. Johnson, the burning of American flag is not punishable by law.

The unrest outside the White House was a response to the recent nationwide demonstrations against police brutality and racism. Some of the protests have called for tearing down Confederate statues or monuments of people who promoted slavery.
