Catholic men across the United States are ditching creature comforts for a grueling three-month spiritual challenge leading up to Easter. The Exodus 90 program requires participants to adhere to strict ascetic practices to reclaim their lives from modern addictions and idols.
Founder Jamie Baxter launched the initiative in 2015 to help men embrace their God-given identities through sacrifice and brotherhood. The program emphasizes that these disciplines are not mere self-help exercises but intentional acts to foster a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.
“The big thing I emphasize with my guys, though, is the disciplines are only there to build this relationship with God,” says participant Aidan Kunath.
“They’re closing things to open up the door to your relationship with God.”
The program addresses a culture that often dismisses traditional masculinity or promotes toxic alternatives by offering a path toward true freedom. Participants engage in daily check-ins and weekly meetings to share their struggles and successes within a trusted fraternity.
“We’re talking about taking up practices that are not primarily about becoming a more disciplined person; they’re about being a more Christlike person,” says Doyle Baxter.
“My own Exodus experience is very much one of coming to the program seeking its freedom from the pharaohs who lorded over me and ultimately finding it.”
By removing distractions like social media and unnecessary purchases, men find space to focus on their marriages, prayer lives, and personal growth. The 90-day period culminates in an Easter celebration, marking a return to indulgence with a renewed spiritual perspective.
