Mexican Diplomats and Activists Plot US Influence

Clear Facts
- Mexican diplomats and activists organized political meetings inside the United States to coordinate opposition to immigration restrictions, particularly those advocated by Donald Trump.
- High-level Mexican officials, including figures from the Foreign Ministry and consulates across major American cities, participated in the gatherings and worked with US-based activists.
- The Mexican government has used media efforts like Migrant TV to broadcast anti-Trump and anti-ICE messages to millions of Mexicans living in America, signaling direct involvement in US domestic politics.
In late May 2024, over sixty individuals met at the Mexican consulate in Oklahoma City, including diplomats, politicians, and activists, to discuss political strategies during the heated US presidential election.
The stated aim was to influence US policy for the benefit of Mexican communities by emphasizing citizen participation and collective action against American immigration restrictions pushed by Donald Trump.
Cristina Planter, then director general for North American Political Affairs at Mexico’s Foreign Ministry, addressed the group, alongside a recorded message from Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena highlighting the meeting’s significance.
“Now from this side of the border we are going to create conditions and support the agenda of Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum,” Karina Ruiz announced, a DACA recipient and political activist from Arizona soon to join the Mexican Senate.
Ruiz led protests in states like Arizona and Washington, DC, while openly supporting Mexico’s influence in American politics.
Mexican and American operatives planned actions behind closed doors, sidestepping US laws prohibiting foreign interference in national elections.
Following Trump’s return to office in January 2025, Mexico boosted outreach through Migrant TV, sending political messages to millions of Mexicans in America, calling the Trump administration’s actions racist and labeling ICE as repressive.
American media largely ignored Mexico’s deep involvement in American political issues, even as similar activity elsewhere has drawn substantial criticism and media scrutiny.
American progressives have largely welcomed this foreign influence, framing it as resistance to Trump rather than interference.
Mexico’s involvement in US affairs is not new but has grown in tandem with increased illegal immigration.
Among key operatives is Alejandro Robles, a former Mexican Chamber of Deputies member, now organizing Mexican communities in the United States.
“The extreme speech of ‘Make America Great Again’ ignores the migrant contribution, and, thus, deserves an extreme response,” Robles said. “The Mexican people are not alone; we have a patriotic government and a political party Morena, dedicated to the defense of its people.”
These activities demonstrate growing involvement of the Mexican government in shaping political outcomes on American soil.
