Same-sex marriage protection bill passes in Senate [Video]

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- Twelve Republicans and 49 Democrats voted 61-36 to pass a bill protecting federal recognition of same-sex marriage.
- The bill was meant to be a safeguard for when the Supreme Court decides to overturn a 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
- The legislation will not block states from banning same-sex marriage if allowed by the Supreme Court.
The Senate has passed a bill protecting the federal recognition of same-sex and interracial marriage, allaying concerns that the Supreme Court could overturn a landmark ruling legalizing it nationwide.
The Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 8404) will require the federal government to recognize a marriage that is legal in the state it was performed.
The legislation was made after the Supreme Court overturned a 50-year-old landmark ruling that established the nationwide right to an abortion. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas suggested in his concurring opinion to look into rulings that protected other individual freedoms such as same-sex marriage.
The bill was meant to be a safeguard if the Supreme Court does decide to overturn the 2015 ruling recognizing same-sex marriage nationwide. It will not, however, stop states from prohibiting same-sex or interracial marriages if allowed by the Supreme Court.
On Nov. 16, the Senate voted 62-37 to advance the bill into a debate before a final vote on its passage.
On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the Senate voted 61-36, reaching the 60 votes required to pass it. The 49 Democrats in attendance were joined by 12 Republicans in voting for the bill. Two Republican senators and Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) were absent.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer celebrated the move, saying, “Today the long but inexorable march towards greater equality advances forward. By passing this bill, the Senate is sending a message that every American needs to hear: no matter who you are or who you love, you too deserve dignity and equal treatment under the law.”
Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed a bill that is similar but not identical, with 47 Republicans joining all Democrats in supporting it.
This Senate-amended version will go to the House for approval before heading to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D) said that the House will likely discuss the bill next week.
The U.S. Census Bureau lists about 568,000 married same-sex couples in the United States.

Ridiculous. Nobody is “pushing” this “thingy” onto anyone. The sexual preference has been around for as long as recorded history. It’s always been apparent that those who make the most noise are the repressed homosexuals trying to impress Reichwing herd mentalities that they’re something else. Heteros shouldn’t give a damn one way or another as it doesn’t affect them. It’s dim-witted low IQ fascholes like Clarabelle who want to legislate everyone else’s lives, dynamiting their personal freedom and liberties. Repugnants have shifted to the right of insanity and have anointed themselves as the Amerikkkan Taliban. Maybe their next step will be having states brand the LBTQ community with pink triangles on the way to the gas chambers like their Nazi mentors did. After all, Nazis are getting quite the Hollywood makeovers these days, as tens of $ billions of our public funds are misdirected to them in Europe, their heinous acts blacked out by the corporate consolidated presstitute media.
If anything this is the Dementiacraps way of distracting women who they failed by not codifying Roe sometime over the last 50 years or even balancing the SCROTUS with some sanity. They allowed the perjurious boofers on the court to dynamite stare decisis and legislate their irrational Reichwing doctrine from the bench, handing the states the power of eminent domain over women’s reproductive organs. Nothing like reverting back to the Dark Ages in the 21st century. Both of these corrupt monopoly parties are less than useless and at eternal war on Main Street. You won’t see many abortions coming out of same sex marriages.
Repugnants need their phony culture wars to distract brainwashed dunderheads from their primary and everlasting mission: taxcuts and handouts to billionaires, mega-millionaires and polluters paid for by working people. They’re essentially 18th century Tories, devoted to hereditary autocratic oligarchic kleptocracy – thus their contempt for democratic elections and undermining the public’s faith in them.
The only sane vote is the vote of no confidence in this shitshow.

The way the Americans are fast turning nature upside down, a Sodom & Gomorrah which is what God destroyed in biblical times is being created in our times right up. It’s absurd to support same sex marriage but abhor polygamy, a decent form of marriage.

GOD is coming to Judge the world, HE will bring HIS wrath down on the wicked, I pray for all to get your houses in order.
Hell will not be a party, the only face you will see is JESUS CHRIST after that each individual will be tormented in their own little tiny space over and over again for ETERNITY!
