  • Stephen A. Smith defended Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer for meeting with President Donald Trump, emphasizing her responsibility to work with the federal government.
  • Smith criticized Democrats for lacking leadership and vision, contributing to Trump’s success in the 2024 elections.
  • Smith argued that Democrats focus on issues unrelated to Americans’ concerns, failing to address economic matters effectively.

In a recent interview, ESPN host Stephen A. Smith stood up for Michigan’s Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer against critics who disapproved of her meeting with President Donald Trump.

During a conversation on “This Week,” Smith highlighted Whitmer’s duty to engage with the federal government for the benefit of her state.

“She’s the governor of Michigan. She has no choice but to do that, and anybody that thinks otherwise is just being foolish and immature and childish,” Smith stated.

He further elaborated on the necessity of cooperation between state and federal levels, pointing out, “You need to do business with the federal government. He’s the president of the United States, you don’t get to circumvent him.”

Smith didn’t hold back when addressing the Democratic Party’s shortcomings, attributing Trump’s 2024 election victory to their lack of direction.

“They seem rudderless, to say the least, and now it’s at a point where they’re getting mocked religiously,” Smith remarked.

He criticized the party for failing to address significant issues, saying, “They talked about everything from woke culture to cancel culture to abortion rights and all of this other stuff, but that wasn’t going to win the election.”

Smith’s comments underscore a broader critique of the Democratic Party’s current state, as he noted, “There’s only one party running this country right now, because the Democrats have no muscle whatsoever.”

This perspective highlights the challenges facing Democrats as they navigate a political landscape where economic concerns and effective leadership are paramount.
