WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Donald Trump tweeted on Sunday, expressing his dismay with former President George W. Bush, for he did not support him during his impeachment trial but managed to release a video calling Americans to unite and set aside differences amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Bush never commented about Trump’s impeachment case but he and his family have voiced out criticisms over his administration.
  • Bush invoked the 9/11 terrorist attack in his video message, noting that the Americans have faced “times of testing before.”

In a tweet on Sunday, President Donald Trump called out former President George W. Bush after the latter issued an appeal to Americans to unite in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bush encouraged the Americans via a three-minute video on Twitter last Saturday to remember how “small our differences are in the face of this shared threat.”

“In the final analysis, we are not partisan combatants. We are human beings, equally vulnerable and equally wonderful in the sight of God… We rise or fall together, and we are determined to rise,” the former president said.

On Sunday, Trump called out Bush on his tweet to Fox News Anchor Pete Hegseth as Bush did not speak up against his impeachment trial earlier this year, which could have been a manifestation of “putting partisanship aside.”

Trump faced impeachment in December 2019 for allegedly pressuring Ukraine to open an investigation against his Democratic political rival. The president was acquitted by the Senate in February.

“He was nowhere to be found in speaking up against the greatest Hoax in American history,” Trump said.

Bush never commented on Trump’s impeachment case, though he and some of his family members have expressed criticism over the president and his administration.

In the same video published on Twitter, the former president invoked the September 11, 2011 terrorist attacks in his message, noting that the country has faced “times of testing before.”

“Let’s remember that the suffering we experience as a nation does not fall evenly. In the days to come, it will be especially important to care in practical ways for the elderly, the ill and the unemployed,” he said.

Trump continued to face criticisms over his handling of the health crisis especially during the early stage of the coronavirus outbreak.
