Trump Shares Update on Iran Protest Crackdown
Clear Facts
- President Donald Trump said he was told Iran has stopped killing protesters and does not plan further executions.
- Trump cited information from “very important sources on the other side” regarding the situation in Iran.
- Iran has reportedly killed at least 2,000 anti-regime protesters during recent unrest.
President Trump announced Wednesday that he received assurances from Iran that the killing of protesters has ceased and no additional executions are expected. His remarks follow reports of thousands of deaths amid demonstrations inside the country.
Trump noted he was informed by “very important sources on the other side” and referenced a shopkeeper allegedly facing execution, stating new plans for such actions are not expected despite previous indications.
“We were told that the killing in Iran is stopping, and there’s no plan for executions,” Trump told reporters.
“The killing has stopped. The executions have stopped. There’s no plan for executions or an execution. I’ve been told that on good authority. We’ll find out about it. I’m sure if it happens I’ll be very upset.”
The president also suggested the United States might consider action if Iran’s statements prove false, making clear that all options remain on the table as his administration monitors the developments.
“We’re going to watch and see what the process is,” the president said.
“But we were given a very good, very good statement by people that are aware of what’s going on.”
