President Donald Trump suggested on Thursday that he could use the Insurrection Act to stop what he described as attacks against federal immigration officials in Minnesota. He emphasized that this federal authority would allow him to deploy military resources to restore order.
Trump noted this as a response to the recent protests in Minneapolis, which erupted after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good.
“If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The Department of Homeland Security reported that an ICE agent was ambushed by three people while detaining a suspected illegal immigrant. DHS said the agent was attacked with a snow shovel and a broomstick before firing a defensive shot, injuring one suspect’s leg. Both the agent and the wounded suspect were hospitalized, and the other two attackers were arrested.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed a confrontation between a federal agent and another person, but did not say if an ambush took place. O’Hara reported some protesters threw fireworks at officers near the scene.
After the second ICE-related shooting in Minneapolis within a week, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized Trump, saying, “What Donald Trump wants is violence in the streets.”
Walz told residents to “remain an island of decency, of justice, of community, and of peace,” and added, “Don’t give [Trump] what he wants.”
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey claimed federal agents are “creating chaos” in the city. He expressed concern about calls for local police to confront federal agents.
“We cannot be at a place right now in America where we have two governmental entities that are literally fighting one another,” Frey said.
Trump maintained that the protests were the work of “professional agitators.” In a recent demonstration, organizers reportedly dispersed after accomplishing their “goal time.”
The Insurrection Act was last used in 1992 by President George H.W. Bush during the Los Angeles riots, which restored order but followed significant damage.
