Former Press Secretary Sean Spicer says Donald Trump used his four years out of office to refine his approach. He argues that time helped shape a more loyal and disciplined inner circle.
Strategic Planning
Spicer said the break from the Oval Office gave Trump time to rethink both process and priorities. He believes that led to a more cohesive team than the one assembled during Trump’s first term.
“Four years out of office gave him time to think. The people, the process in the policies when you’re out of office, you get to think to yourself, what will I do differently when I come back?”
He also contrasted newer appointments with earlier cabinet choices that lacked personal history with Trump. Spicer pointed to Pete Hegseth as an example of the value of long-standing trust.
“If you think about Rex Tillerson, the secretary of state. He didn’t know Trump. We literally called him up. They had no relationship. Pete Hegseth and the president have known each other for 15 years.”
Political Realignment
Spicer also discussed the changing identity of both major parties. He said Republicans now better reflect working men and women across the country.
“The dynamic has shifted. Republicans are now the party of working men and women. And what the Democrats stand for depends on who you are.”
He criticized Democrats as a coalition built around grievance rather than a unifying national message. Spicer said that approach can leave traditional voters looking elsewhere.
“The left and more specifically, the Democratic Party is cobbled together through a bunch of coalitions of grievance. Right? They’re not for anything.”
