Winter Storm Grounds Flights Across America

Clear Facts
- A major winter storm caused around 3,800 flight cancellations and over 1,000 delays on Monday across the U.S.
- The storm brought heavy snow and freezing rain to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, complicating road and air travel.
- Over 820,000 customers lost power from Tennessee to the Carolinas, with Tennessee hit hardest.
Severe winter conditions grounded thousands of flights and caused extensive travel disruptions throughout the eastern United States. Monday saw some of the heaviest impacts on air and road systems as snow and ice spread across multiple regions.
The U.S. National Weather Service said low pressure south of New England would move over the Atlantic, increasing snowfall in the Northeast and spreading freezing rain through the Mid-Atlantic.
“Weather-related constraints, including snow, freezing rain and low visibility, were affecting major hubs such as Boston and the New York-area airspace,” the Federal Aviation Administration said in an advisory.
American Airlines reported the most cancellations, with Delta, JetBlue, and Republic Airways also facing high numbers of grounded and delayed flights. Carriers introduced flexible re-booking policies for affected passengers due to the widespread disruptions.
As the day progressed, the number of delayed and canceled trips continued to rise. International flights, including several operated by KLM, also experienced interruptions but began returning to normal schedules by Monday.
“Driving conditions could become dangerous as blizzard-like conditions, strong winds, and ice spread further,” the Federal Emergency Management Agency warned.
Over 820,000 customers experienced power outages early Monday, especially in Tennessee and the Carolinas, according to PowerOutage.us data.
Travelers were left seeking information online as their plans changed suddenly. Both air and road networks struggled to keep pace with the storm’s impact.
