ABC Benches Kimmel, Sparks Conservative Debate

Clear Facts

  • Disney removed Jimmy Kimmel “indefinitely” after comments about Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
  • The move followed pressure from ABC affiliates and the FCC over Kimmel’s remarks.
  • Reactions split among conservatives on free speech and accountability concerns.

Disney’s decision to sideline Jimmy Kimmel came after he made contentious comments about the tragic murder of conservative leader Charlie Kirk. The action followed significant pushback from ABC affiliates nationwide, along with federal scrutiny.

Some accuse ABC of surrendering to government pressure, while others see the removal as deserved. Conservatives voiced both support and concern with the network’s approach.

“Cancel culture? No. Consequence culture,” OutKick’s Riley Gaines wrote on X.

Kimmel criticized conservatives attempting to link the suspect, Tyler Robinson, to a leftist ideology. Despite Kimmel’s stance, prosecutors reaffirmed those ties during an indictment.

Podcaster Stephen L. Miller argued that Kimmel “spread a false and verifiable lie and the network and Disney rightfully freaked out about it.” Eli Lake commented, “Let’s separate two things. Jimmy Kimmel is an unfunny mediocrity and his take on Charlie Kirk was tasteless, stupid and factually vacant. At the same time the chairman of the FCC should not be programming late night television. That’s a violation of the First Amendment.”

Many maintain government should not intervene in media decisions, instead stressing the importance of company accountability. “I think Jimmy Kimmel is an enormous jerk whom ABC should have yanked off the air of their own will. But Brendan Carr has made that impossible. This doesn’t end anywhere good,” said Jeffrey Blehar of National Review.

“What Jimmy Kimmel said was gross, irresponsible and false. A sane company should absolutely punish a host for abusing their platform in that way. The government should stay out of it and has no role in policing such speech,” AG Hamilton posted.

While some argue the move is an assault on free speech, conservative voices emphasize the distinction between government censorship and employer consequences. Michele Tafoya explained, “A legal mind reminded me that free speech means the govt can’t punish you for things you say, but an employer can hold you accountable. Kimmel isn’t going to prison.”

Attorney Eric Matheny stated, “Kimmel getting fired is not the greatest attack on free speech we’ve ever seen” and added, “About once or twice a year, I have to explain free speech like I’m talking to a kindergarten class. If Jimmy Kimmel got arrested and prosecuted for what he said on his show, that’s a free speech violation. If his employer decides to take him off the air? That’s not.”

These developments came after FBI officials and Utah Governor Spencer Cox identified Robinson’s leftist ideology and radicalization. Evidence showed Robinson was in a relationship with a biologically male transgender partner transitioning to female.

Benny Johnson described Disney’s decision as a “generational culture war victory,” writing, “What Jimmy Kimmel said about Charlie Kirk is indefensible. It made us all angry. But how do we channel that righteous anger into something productive? We must focus, isolate the enemy and apply swift, immense tactical pressure.” Johnson also highlighted the responsibility of companies holding broadcast licenses and the impact of organized, customer-driven responses.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s warning to Disney reinforced expectations on compliance with public interest standards in broadcasting following Kimmel’s remarks.

I agree totally with your sentiment, however, your post reminds me of something my father taught me 70+ years ago, if one cannot express their thoughts without resorting to profanity, vulgarity and/or obscenities they are sorely lacking in intellegence and social and verbal comunnication skills. It holds true today.
