Congressman Flags Food Choices Fueling Health Costs

Rep. Eric Burlison spoke before Congress on the importance of nutrition choices as a driver of the nation’s escalating medical bills.
Burlison said
“Healthcare is not just about insurance, it’s about being healthy.”
He noted that Americans spend comparatively little on nutritious food, but pay heavily later through insurance and medical bills.
Total U.S. health spending for 2025 is projected to hit $5.6 trillion, with medical costs outpacing economic growth.
Medicare accounted for 17.8% of U.S. spending in 2025, making it a major component of the budget.
Burlison’s Make America Healthy Again Accounts would allow individuals to set aside up to $25,000 tax-free per person or $50,000 per family for medical and wellness expenses.
The funds could be used for healthy food, supplements, and gym memberships, encouraging better personal choices.
Burlison said
“The unique idea that we have is we’re going to allow for a particular amount of money out of this account to be spent on healthy food, protein, produce, vitamin supplements, and yes, maybe a gym membership, so that people are encouraged.”
“Don’t go buy junk food, go buy unprocessed healthy food. And if you do buy it, we’re going to give you a tax deduction on that.”
Employers would be able to contribute, helping with premiums and costs without feeding into excessive insurance bureaucracy.
Every account would come with a $5,000 interest-free credit line for deductibles or emergencies.
Burlison’s proposal arrives as lawmakers struggle with failed efforts to extend Obamacare subsidies, which could increase the federal deficit if continued.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said
“The American people made it clear they wanted the ACA tax credits extended.”
Burlison compared extending these subsidies to financially supporting a failing system.
Burlison said
“I think it’s a fool’s errand to throw money down on the sinking ship.”
“Instead, we really need to reform healthcare and let people purchase the healthcare that they truly want and need.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson announced a floor vote on a Republican-backed plan will take place next week.
