Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino has confirmed he will step down from his position next month following several years of service under President Trump. Bongino shared his decision Wednesday on X after President Trump remarked, “I think he wants to go back to his show.”
“I will be leaving my position with the FBI in January. I want to thank President Trump, AG Bondi, and Director Patel for the opportunity to serve with purpose. Most importantly, I want to thank you, my fellow Americans, for the privilege to serve you. God bless America, and all those who defend Her,” said Bongino.
Since his appointment in February, Bongino focused on high-profile FBI priorities, including investigating the pipe bombs found outside Republican and Democratic headquarters on January 5, 2021. Attorney General Pam Bondi called the arrest of the bombing suspect “the best birthday present” Bongino could have asked for.
Bongino, a veteran of the NYPD and Secret Service, was known in conservative media for scrutinizing scandals like Operation Crossfire Hurricane and the Epstein case. Internal disputes over the handling of the Epstein files and related probes caused friction within the Justice Department.
White House chief-of-staff Susie Wiles criticized Bondi’s release of Epstein material, noting, “First she gave them binders full of nothingness. And then she said that the witness list, or the client list, was on her desk. There is no client list, and it sure as hell wasn’t on her desk.”
Wiles praised Bongino and Director Kash Patel for pushing for transparency, describing them as “two of the loudest voices calling for transparency on Epstein, suspecting that information on his connections to some elites had been buried in non-public government records.” Bongino and Patel concluded the secret files likely did not exist after a thorough investigation.
Tensions between Bongino and Bondi are believed to have contributed to his decision to exit. The department’s handling of high-profile cases remains contentious.
