Rhode Island police have taken former New England Patriots fullback Patrick Pass into custody following an accusation that he assaulted an 82-year-old man. The incident reportedly took place on August 28th at a Planet Fitness in Providence.
The altercation began over an argument involving exercise equipment. Providence police stated that Pass allegedly shoved the elderly man, Juan Muriel, causing injuries to his lower back.
Muriel expressed his dismay over the incident, saying,
“I feel like somebody pushed me for nothing.”
He added that he is recovering well and feels “almost ninety percent” better after initially struggling to walk or lay down.
Muriel, a big Patriots fan, shared his disbelief over the incident, noting that he “used to go to almost every game.”
Pass, on the other hand, denied the allegations.
“Look at me. Do you think I’m going to do that, really? Please, come on,” he said.
“I have better things to do than try to assault someone.”
Neighbors of Pass were equally shocked. Sydney Demedeiros, a neighbor, commented,
“I’m so shocked right now. He’s always been a good guy.”
“It’s the big superstar in the neighborhood, so I’m shocked, actually. Never showed any signs of anger that I know of.”
Patrick Pass, who was drafted in the seventh round of the 2000 NFL Draft, had a notable career with the New England Patriots. He was part of three Super Bowl-winning teams during his seven seasons with the team. Pass also briefly played for the New York Giants in 2007.
Following his arrest, Pass was arraigned in a Rhode Island court where he was ordered to have no contact with Muriel. His bail was set at $10,000 personal recognizance, and he is scheduled to return to court on January 8th.
