Hegseth Says Iran’s New Rulers Changed Negotiation Terms

Clear Facts
- Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said Iran is now being led by a new regime with a different approach to negotiations.
- He linked that shift to Operation Epic Fury, which he said neutralized top Iranian leaders and IRGC commanders.
- President Trump imposed a two-week ceasefire while warning of severe consequences if Tehran refuses nuclear disarmament demands.
The War Department said Iran’s previous leadership structure was dismantled during recent military action. Hegseth said the current figures in power have seen the full strength of the U.S. military.
He added that the new leadership understands a nuclear weapon is no longer an option. He also said the United States retains the right to strike nuclear assets if they are not surrendered voluntarily.
“As far as the new regime, you, you heard the list that I read, it’s a new group of people who’ve seen the full capability of the United States military and has a new calculus about what it means to negotiate with us, hence why they came to the table wanting a ceasefire and the shooting to stop.”
Hegseth said the military will not be distracted by nation-building or moralizing. He said the focus remains on U.S. security through strength and clear consequences for aggression.
“So, this new regime, which — the regime has been changed — has a different interaction with the U.S.”
Recent reports said the Israeli government helped identify high-value targets tied to the collapse. Despite the shaky ceasefire, the Trump administration has imposed a 50% tariff on any nation supplying weapons to Iran.
