Jones passed away peacefully this morning at his home in Dutchess County, New York, with his family by his side, according to a statement from his representative.
Jones’s illustrious career spanned decades, earning him the prestigious EGOT status—an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
He received two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and three Tony Awards.
Although he did not win a competitive Oscar, Jones was honored with an Honorary Academy Award presented by Sir Ben Kingsley.
Kevin Costner, who starred alongside Jones in “Field of Dreams,” paid tribute to the actor on social media, stating:
“Just hearing the news of James Earl Jones’s passing. That booming voice. That quiet strength. The kindness that he radiated. So much can be said about his legacy, so I’ll just say how thankful I am that part of it includes Field of Dreams.”
Costner continued:
“If you’ve seen it, you know that this movie wouldn’t be the same with anyone else in his role. Only he could bring that kind of magic to a movie about baseball and a corn field in Iowa. I’m grateful to have been a witness to him making that magic happen. Rest in peace, friend.”
Jones’s career began in the theater in the early 1950s, where he earned acclaim as one of the finest Shakespearean actors.
His roles included Othello, King Lear, Oberon in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and Claudius in “Hamlet.”
He received four competitive Tony Award nominations for best actor, winning twice for his performances in “The Great White Hope” in 1969 and August Wilson’s “Fences” in 1987.
In 2017, Jones was honored with a special Tony Award at the 71st Tony Awards.
Jones made his film debut in Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” in 1964.
His most iconic role came in 1977 when he voiced Darth Vader in George Lucas’s “Star Wars.”
He reprised this role in “The Empire Strikes Back” in 1980 and “Return of the Jedi” in 1983.
Jones also starred in numerous successful films, including “Conan the Barbarian,” “Coming to America,” “The Sandlot,” “Patriot Games,” and “Clear and Present Danger.”

Mr. Jones can’t sing worth a lick. When he performed the National Anthem, at an Orioles game, he brought a choir for the melody, and he recited the lyrics. It was unforgettably touching. “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”

There is another person who has that deep voice and I mentioned to him he should get into voice commercials.
