Rep. Ilhan Omar recounted during a television interview that her son was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after shopping at Target.

She said

“Yesterday, after he made a stop at Target, he did get pulled over by ICE agents, and once he was able to produce his passport ID, they did let him go.”

Omar explained that her son takes his passport everywhere in case of such encounters.

“He always carries it with him.”

Omar said.

She also described an earlier incident at a mosque where ICE entered but did not detain anyone.

Omar sent a letter to federal officials alleging ICE is conducting racial profiling and using excessive force in Minnesota.

“Constituents, advocates, and local officials have documented blatant racial profiling, an egregious level of unnecessary force, and activity that appears designed for social media rather than befitting a law enforcement agency,”

She wrote.

Omar further linked the incidents to President Trump’s remarks about Somali immigrants and herself.

“It is clear to me that this surge came in direct response to Trump’s racist comments about Somali people, and about me in particular. Earlier this month, Trump called Somali immigrants ‘garbage’ and ranted that he does not want us in this country,”

Omar added.
