WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • An expert from Italy claims coronavirus is becoming less deadly, says it could vanish soon even without a vaccine.
  • Dr. Matteo Bassetti, an Italian authority in infectious disease, said the reason could be because of the natural state of mutation.
  • Other experts are not as optimistic, though, as coronavirus is too massively infectious to go away soon.

An Italian infectious disease expert thinks the coronavirus has weakened and could go away even if a vaccine is not made available.

Head of the infectious diseases department at the San Martino hospital, Dr. Matteo Bassetti, claimed the coronavirus has seemed to become less intoxicating. This could be attributed to natural mutations, according to Sunday Telegraph.

Bassetti told the outlet that the infection is drastically changing, noting that in the months of March and April, the virus’s behavior is different from what it was recently.

Earlier, patients were being admitted to the emergency room with severe symptoms and would require ventilation and oxygen, and some even acquire pneumonia. He further noted that senior citizens hospitalized are now breathing without the need for machines. If it were a few months ago, elderly patients would have passed away in two or three days.

The specialist also explained that one possible reason for the weakening of the virus is its mutation following lockdown measures, including social distancing and wearing a mask.

He further noted that the virus would be potentially gone by the time researchers discover a vaccine, adding that fewer people get infected daily.

However, another expert, Dr. Bharat Pankhania, disputed Bassetti’s claim, saying the virus may take years to go away,  the Telegraph reported.

Dr. Pankhania,  a lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School of UK,  told the outlet that COVID-19 would only be gone if there’s one else to infect, explaining that the current virus has too contagious for it to go away soon.
